Perhaps you have found interest in solarpanel systems lately? You might have seen them popping up on rooftops in your neighbourhood. The increase in solar panels reminds of when cell phones first came to Canada. I remember
When my father purchased one of these phones and how extremely expensive they were, and how bulky they were. In my teenage mind I thought to myself, “How can they make a business out of these things when so few people use them, they are so expensive and they are so big and bulky!”
Well, my teenage mind was inexperienced and I did not realize the need or demand for cell phones until I was a little older, the price came down, the phones were smaller, and they were reliable and everyone had one!
The same is happening today with solarpanel systems I believe. When they first started to appear on rooftops back in 2009 (when you started to see them all over), it was due to the microFIT program. The MicroFIT program allowed homeowners and businesses to sell the electricity they generate from the solar panels to the Ontario Power Authority. This made it feasible for normal everyday people (not just the greeny tree-huggers) to purchase solar panel systems.
Lately we have seen the solarpanels reduce in price (by about 70% reduction in cost since 2009), we have seen the panels become more efficient (and less bulky), and we have seen their popularity rise. So, the same thing is happening with solar panels as has happened with cell phones. Pretty soon everyone will have a system, and why not? They are good for our environment, great for your pocket-book. They improve your home’s resale value, and they help our electricity grid. Why let all those powerful sun rays that hit your roof everyday go to waste. It is free energy from the sun and you get to farm it with the solar panels.
