In 2009 the Ontario Power Authority started the MicroFit program. Under the MicroFit program you can put a solar array on the roof of your home, business or any building that you own. You will receive a 20 year contract from the OPA that states that you will be paid a set amount of money for every kiloWatt hour that your system produces. This price is set for the next 20 years.
It’s a great program. Germany is the front runner for harnessing solar power. Most of the solar arrays that are installed in the world are installed in Germany. However, now Ontario has a great feed and tariff program that is allowing more and more people to benefit from solar energy.
There are a lot of solar companies in Ontario. A lot. Solar is a 20 year investment and big decision and purchase to make. When it comes to installing this system on your property you want to make sure that you work with a company who knows what they are doing, will install the system on time and in a timely manner and take care of problems down the line.
You also want to make sure that the company you choose makes you feel comfortable. The company needs to take time to answer your questions and concerns. There should be a timeline for your projects completion.
Be aware of all costs that you will be required to pay. As well as the installation price, you will need to pay to have an engineer come check out your roof to make sure that it can hold the extra weight of the roof. You may also have to pay for the building permit, the connection fee to the hydro company and for an electrician to come finish the final electrical connection. Some of these costs may be included in the price and some may not. Make sure everything is clear before moving ahead.
Call around, talk to previous clients and do your research to make sure that you get the best solar company for you.
