How much electricity will you save?
A 10 kW system on a south facing roof will offset your hydro bill an average of 1,000 kWh per month. That is what an average home in Ontario consumes. If you are using about 30 kWh per day on average, you will completely eliminate your electricity charges on your bill. If your electricity charges are gone, your bill will be $5.25/month just for that account fee.
Tax Benefits: As Canadians, we live one of the highest standards of life in the world, and we pay high taxes for it!!! One major benefit of Net Metering is that you will be saving “after-tax dollars”. What does that mean? It means that you are currently paying your hydro bill with money for which you have already paid income tax on, so you had to work twice as hard to get that money because you might only be left with half of it once you have paid your income tax. When you install a Net Metering system, you will be saving that hard-earned money! Think of it this way, how many hours would you have to work to make $100? How many hours would you have to work to actually get paid $100 on your pay cheque? If you are like most people, you probably have to work more hours to get paid that $100 than you would to simply earn it. Start saving your hard-earned money now!
Increasing Returns: Could you imagine if you made an investment today and the annual return continued to increase endlessly? Think of a GIC that pays 4% in its 1st year, 7% in its 5th year, 10% in its 10th year, and 20% in its 15th year!! That would really be something, wouldn’t it? Net Metering is exactly like that! As electricity rates increase over time, you will save more and more money every single month. Ask yourself this question: After you paid your last hydro bill, what do you have left to show for that expense? Nothing!! In Fact, the longer you wait to do a Net Metering system, the more expensive it is because you have to continually pay those hydro bills up until you generate as much or more power than you currently use. Wait 6 months to start, and add those six months of bills to the cost of your system because those bill payments are never coming back to you with either principal or interest.
Freedom from Price Hikes! Does it bother you that you have no control over your electricity charges? The other day I got off the phone with a customer who was livid over all the extra charges on her bill.
Lets look at some of the charges on your Hydro Bill:
Delivery: When was the last time that a delivery man showed up at your door to give you your electricity. Can anyone explain why some people are paying up to $200/month in delivery alone!!
Debt Retirement Charge: By the way, this isn’t a savings plan for your retirement. This is to pay for all of the mistakes that the old Ontario Hydro made. Why are you paying for those mistakes and the debt of others, and can anyone answer the question of when that debt will ever be paid off?
Regulatory Charges: Hydro One explains this charge is for paying the wholesalers to set the price of electricity. I guess we have to pay them to set the high pricing on our bills.
Adjustment Factors: Did you know that you are typically being charged an extra 4% for your electricity to adjust for losses in transmission. Isn’t that the purpose of the “delivery” charge?
HST: The government gets their hands on every bit of money that comes into your pocket. They took some off your pay cheque already. Now they are double-dipping and adding it to your purchase as well. Net Metering is a perfect way to “stick-it-to-em” and tell the government that you can keep that HST, thank you very much!
Time of Use: Does it really cost more to generate electricity during peak hours of the day? Of course it doesn’t! So what is the purpose of the On-Peak rate and why is it so high? It is the government’s way of encouraging people to turn off their stuff during peak hours so that the grid doesn’t fail on everyone. The grid can only support a maximum amount of energy, so if every household turns on their air conditioners at the same time on a hot day, there is a risk that the grid could fail. How do you educate the public to use energy at different times of the day so that everyone does not use it at once? You charge extra for the energy in the peak hours. Does it bother your that the government’s time-of-use social experiment is another tax that you pay for in the electricity which you buy?
